Methotrexate vs plaquenil side effects long term and short term The only problem is the Plaquenil causes severe headaches that interfer with my daily activities also. But the Dr suggested I try Methotrexate instead. Iā€™m sorry to hear about the negatives regarding Plaquenil. It has been a miracle drug for me with the pain from RA. The exact causes of a lupus headache are in question, but experts believe this type of headache is related to problems with dilation and constriction of an affected person's blood vessels. Doctors, however, typically treat these headaches in much the same way as tension headaches or severe headaches referred to as migraines.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Let me tell you what weaning down from Plaquenil is like. So that's the update. The lesson here is - for those who need to go off plaquenil, be careful about just going off it cold turkey. Obviously some of CAN do that, but if you don't know if you're one of them - better to be on the safe side and wean slowly. Take it from me! I am feeling much better after bumping my dose back up over the last few.
