Long term use of plaquenil and surgery

So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Find patient medical information for Plaquenil Oral on WebMD including its uses, side effects and safety, interactions, pictures, warnings and user ratings. Nov 12, 2009 It takes a really long time for the Plaquenil to kick in. It may even take a year. Mine didn't start working until I was on it for 8 months and I take more than you do. I take 200 mg twice a day. I initially started at 800mg a day then dropped it to 400 mg a day. Please don't give up, you will have good days and bad days.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.

Jun 09, 2006 Despite improved medical therapy, many RA patients still require orthopedic surgery, most frequently total joint arthroplasty. These surgical techniques have also improved, with infectious complications seen in primary arthroplasty dropping from over 10% to 20% in the earliest series to the current rates of 1% 1. Safety of Long term use of Hydroxychloroquine Therapy Further Verified for People with Lupus Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for symptoms of lupus. The greatest concern people with lupus have when taking hydroxychloroquine is related to vision and an increase in risk for retinal damage. Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria. Generally, Plaquenil is a treatment option as monotherapy used alone for mild rheumatoid arthritis or as combination therapy with other DMARDs for moderate to severe disease.
