Does plaquenil suppress your immune system

I started on it just less than 2 weeks ago, and I'm surrounded by ill people at work and already have a bit of a cold (nothing severe). it is "milder" than a lot of the other dmards in terms of side effects and activity x It is listed as having a mild immunosuppressant effect in my book on RA, but one of the reasons for the blood tests is to check that your immune system is not being suppressed too much (eg checking your white blood cell levels), so you shouldn't be completely vulnerable. Even after several years of taking lots of drugs I've not found any difference in the number of colds etc I get, and loads of people on here are teachers etc who get a lot of exposure to colds and coughs without too much problem.

Overall, most serious fungal infections are rare, but they do happen. They are most common among people with weak immune systems. People with certain health conditions may need to take medications with side effects that can weaken your immune system and put you at risk for fungal infections. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is the drug of choice for many physicians who treat rheumatologic skin diseases. It is the most readily available and frequently prescribed antimalarial in the US. Antimalarial medications are extremely safe and do not overtly suppress the immune system. This dosing would NOT apply to someone already taking plaquenil, because it has a very long ~ 30 days half-life, and it’s already in your system, so you just keep on keep’n on. This is not intended to be medical advice; this is just a reminder to refill whatever Rx for plaquenil you might already have.

Polly Thank you both, I thought it shouldn't be too bad and that it's pretty mild in comparison to other drugs. Always better to be well informed and I remember the consultant saying its bit a bad time of year to start on it as I've missed all the bugs round Christmas time so thought there may be a slim chance of it being suppressed. But do look after yourself, and make sure you eat well and don't get too tired as if you have a cold already you need to pamper yourself a bit more than you would have before RA.

  7. Plaquenil itself probably does not have a direct affect on your immune system - it is a DMARD and is not considered to be an immunosuppressant. However, many with active autoimmune diseases feel that they are not succeptible to many of the common viruses that they are exposed to - somewhat of a silver lining.

A rare side effect of Plaquenil involves visual changes or possible loss of vision —the side effect that is most worrisome for patients. These medications may also prevent lupus from spreading to certain organs, such as the kidney and central nervous system your brain and spinal cord and may help to reduce flares by as much as 50%. Plaquenil and other anti-malarials are the key to controlling lupus long term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. Amoebic liver abscess - Wikipedia Rarely, when patients of amoebic liver abscess are vomiting, injection chloroquine can be used in a dose of 0.3–0.6 G. base in 24 hours not exceeding 0.9 G. Chloroquine given alone is a safer drug than emetine in amoebic liver abscess, but unfortunately the relapse rate is almost 25%.
