SIDE EFFECTS. The following adverse reactions have been identified during post-approval use of PLAQUENIL or other 4-aminoqunoline compounds. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine belongs to a group of medicines called quinolines. Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. Plaquenil, hydroxychloroquine HCQ, is an anti-malarial medication that has been proven to be useful in the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis RA, systemic lupus erythematosus SLE and other inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine.

  4. Worsening of psoriasis and porphyria Use of Plaquenil in patients with psoriasis may precipitate a severe attack of psoriasis. When used in patients with porphyria the condition may be exacerbated. The preparation should not be used in these conditions unless in the judgment of the physician the benefit to the patient outweighs the possible.

    • The Risk of Retinal Toxicity with Plaquenil.
    • Plaquenil Use in Autoimmune Diseases.

The Autoimmune Disease the Plaquenil is Used for is Causing Hair loss. Autoimmune disease can cause inflammation in the body and this type of inflammation itself can trigger hair loss in the form of a hair shedding or ‘telogen effluvium.’ When rheumatoid arthritis flares patients can shed hair. When lupus flares, patients can lose hair. Many systemic medications may cause retinal toxicity. One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The findings were suspicious for retinal toxicity, and the patient did reveal a history of Plaquenil use starting at age 30 and lasting for 15 years. She also recalled being asked to discontinue the medication due to an unspecified “retinal problem.”
