Use of chloroquine and other 4-aminoquinolines in high doses and for prolonged durations has been associated with neurological disturbances and interference with hearing, balance, and vision in the fetus. Hydroxychloroquine is usually considered a pregnancy Category C medication. This means that it may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are not known. Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using hydroxychloroquine during pregnancy see Plaquenil and Pregnancy for more information. It is not necessary to withdraw an antimalarial drug during pregnancy if the rheumatic disease is well controlled; however, the manufacturer of hydroxychloroquine advises avoiding use.

Could taking hydroxychloroquine help prevent pregnancy complications? Hydroxychloroquine may benefit pregnancies by reducing active disease of lupus. Hydroxychloroquine may also reduce the chance for a baby to be born with a specific heart conduction problem, called congenital heart block. More studies are needed to understand if hydroxychloroquine helps prevent pregnancy complications. Newer information indicates that infants exposed to hydroxychloroquine during breastfeeding receive only small amounts of the drug in breastmilk. In a small number of infants up to at least 1 year of age, careful follow-up found no adverse effects on growth, vision or hearing. Hydroxychloroquine is recommended as an alternative treatment of pregnant women for uncomplicated malaria in chloroquine-sensitive regions refer to current guidelines CDC 2011.

Lupus - Plaquenil - Are you saying you definitely had eye issues that were related to Plaquenil? That is actually very rare, and I don't know of anyone else active right now who has had problems. When problems do occur, they are supposed to resolve rather quickly with discontinuing Plaquenil.
