    Plaquenil sulfa drug

I read that the sulfa in Plaquenil is different from those in antibiotics and most people with Lupus have an allergy to Sulfa but can take Plaquenil without any problems. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had.

I have been allergic to sulfa meds for over 30 years. I have been taking plaquenil for about 8 years with no problems. However, I was givin the generic Plaquenil at first, and I did have a reaction to that - until now I didn't reliese was the same as my sulfa reaction. Feb 17, 2009 Plaquenil isn't a 'sulfa' drug which means a certain sort of antibiotic, the sulfonamides. Plenty of people who are allergic to those sulfa drugs take Plaquenil without any problem. This sounds all very odd to me! Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives.

My reaction to sulfa consisted of wheezing, but no major distress, and Plaquenil was sufficiently different from Gantrisin that my doctor felt comfortable with prescribing it. Rashes are certainly a lot less severe than respiratory reactions.

Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria. Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is a colorless crystalline solid, soluble in water to at least 20 percent; chemically the drug is 2-4-7-Chloro-4-quinolylaminopentylethylamino ethanol sulfate 11. PLAQUENIL hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets contain 200 mg hydroxychloroquine sulfate, equivalent to 155 mg base, and are for oral administration. Oct 30, 2019 • Retinal toxicity Retinal toxicity, potentially causing irreversible retinopathy, is predominantly associated with high daily doses and a duration of 5 years of use of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of rheumatic diseases. Other major risk factors include concurrent tamoxifen use.

Plaquenil and increased appetite/weight gain Lupus. Started plaquenil about one week ago and have increased appetite ever since. I have spent some time looking into it and it's not associated with hormones or thyroid, it's definitely because of the plaquenil. Research on different sites tell me that while weight loss and plaquenil is common, weight gain and increased appetite is not.
