Others have told me that it only took a few months for them to feel the effects. Everyone is different. I can tell you that plaquenil is the safest of all of the DMARDs. If you're going to stay on a DMARD for a long time, plaquenil is the one to be on. Best of luck on the plaquenil. Plaquenil takes quite a long time to get to its peak effectiveness depending on what you read, anywhere from 3 months to a year. Unless you are having significant side effects, try to give it at least 6 months before you decide it doesn't work for you. The usual starting dose of Plaquenil is 200 mg twice a day or 400 mg once a day, administered orally, in people weighing 80 kg or more. The usual dosage works for most people who take Plaquenil, but it is possible to increase or decrease the dose based on individual needs. It took me about 9 or 10 months. When I developed a severe flare, my rheumy started me on prednisone and plaquenil at the same time. This way while I tapered off the pred over 8 months, the plaquenil was building up in my system. 4 replies

Had to stop taking Plaquenil - I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Also I noticed that the Plaquenil I think was making me feel different but not in a good way.
